Let’s Talk Pigmentation
Winter is the perfect time to take advantage of resurfacing treatments that can help reduce and clear pigmentation.
Let’s start off with understanding what pigmentation is and how it works within in the skin. Pigmentation refers to a staining within the skin. We have cells called Melanocytes that carry and create melanin (our pigment/colour). Pigmentation can present in many forms such as patches of uneven skin tone, dark spots and freckling. Pigment can be triggered by various things but the most common drivers of pigmentation are UV sun damage, ageing and hormones.
So how can we treat it?
There is two ways to tackle any type of pigmentation; inhibiting and slowing the pigment production and treating the pigment itself. But before starting any treatments the most important habit to implement is using SPF daily. Proper SPF application is crucial and will absolutely impact the success of your results. At Glo we offer the O Cosmedics Mineral Pro Zinc based SPF in a 30+ and 50+, protecting your skin from both UVA and UVB.
Within your skincare routine there are some important ingredients to be using. Retinol will help break up stubborn pigment and also repair cellular damage so the skin can function correctly and optimally. Our go to Retinol serums are the Cosmedix Serum 16 or Cosmedix Refine.
Along side Retinol the skin also requires a pigment inhibitor. Pigment inhibiting ingredients slow down the amount of melanin being produced within the skin which is such an important factor for long term success. Our go to serums to help prevent the formation of further pigmentation forming are our Cosmedix B Complex Boosting Powder, Aspect B17, Cosmedix Pure C and Aspect Pigment Punch +.
When it comes to treatments there are a few options to choose from.
If you are sick of stubborn pigment and want rapid results in one treatment then the Cosmelan Peel is a great option. This one off depigmention peel will reduce staining dramatically, leaving skin glowing and even in tone. With some downtime you can expect peeling and shedding of the skin, redness and sensitivity.
Another option could be our powerhouse Timeless Peel. A combination of Retinol and Lactic Acid, this peel encourages cell turnover and delivers impactful results by reducing pigmentation and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With slight downtime, skin will expect to gently peel leaving the skin plump and glowing.
Our third option is our in Haus fave, PRP. Platelet-Rich Plasma combines Skin Needling with the use of the client’s own PRP, drawn on the day of treatment. PRP is most effective in brightening and lightening the overall appearance of the skin.
Implementing these steps, actives and treatments will absolutely help reduce pigmentation. But it is important to remember it is a journey with de-pigmentation and patience is key.
